Moon cakes in Hanoi
During our stay at Sofitel Metropole Hanoi, we had a taste of the Vietnamese moon cakes made authentically with Vietnamese ingredients. They are called "Banh Trung Thu", meaning traditional moon cakes. I didn't know Vietnam celebrates Moon cake festival. I found out that they actually celebrate it as the Autumn Moon cake tradition for centuries even though the communist government had banned or cancelled all secular celebrations.
I tried some of the free samples, which the hostess was so eager to pass to me, and it was mouth watering delicious. The cakes had different ingredients from the Malaysian or Singaporean cakes. I tasted those that had "green beans with salted egg" and the "chocolate with caramel moon cakes" and they were fantastic. The salivary glands wanted more until the eyes landed on the exorbitant price tag that was attached to the box. It was like USD 5 dollars a cake to USD 24 dollars a cake, depending on the type of ingredients. Well, if money is not a problem to you, then head on to Sofitel, and experience some real delights that will last in you minds for years to come.
