Sports sensation front page news

In badminton, we have:

Wong Mew Choo who pulled off the greatest achievement for Malaysian women's badminton by claiming one of the most difficult titles on the international circuit, the China Open, in Guangzhou yesterday.

And the 24-year-old Mew Choo chalked up the historic win in superb style – beating world number one and two-time world champion Xie Xingfang of China 21-16, 8-21, 21-17 in a 62-minute final that saw the Malaysian staging a spectacular comback to win the rubber game.

It was Mew Choo's first-ever Open title since she made her debut on the international senior stage five years ago.

She now holds the honour of being the first Malaysian women and only the second non-China player to win a women's singles title on Chinese territory since the country first staged their Open tournament in 1986...The Star

I was asked by my better half (wife) that sadly, the above sensational news which is worthy of front page splash have been missing. It is an international tournament and an uphill task for Mew Choo to ever have such an impressive win. She was an underdog and would never had deserved a second glance by sports critic. Her name was largely unknown. Few among the badminton greats of the world would even bother to watch her play. Suddenly, she took the China Open title with such an impressive show, and my dear beloved asked me "why is her name not even mentioned in the front page of the Star newspapers? It had already been days and yet no mention of her"

Somehow, we find three girls, Haslisa, Suryani and Ain, encroaching half of the front page of the Star today, because they won the rifle competition in the Korat SEA Games. It is more than half the page, mind you, and if you don't believe me, get a copy for yourself.

My question is, why the biasness, the discrepancies, the improper unbalance of media attention? Is it racially motivated, politically motivated, financially motivated? I don't know. Why don't you come to your own conclusion.
